THE LOVE AFFAIR

Summer-camp

There is great power in a New England sunrise, for it awakened the whole of me.

I can say without doubt or reservation, that my summers in New Hampshire changed the trajectory of my life. Growing up in the shadow of my older brother posed challenges at every turn. Teachers expected more from me, my friends developed crushes on him and the limelight was not something I enjoyed during the school year. I was a self-conscious wallflower and an underachiever, struggling to stay afloat.

MUSIC THERAPY FOR CATS

Cat-calm
Cats. Mood. Music. Music Therapy.

As a child, my father the conductor told me often, "Music is the language of the universe, music is the common language of us all" to explain how he traveled the world and successfully built bridges of communication in foreign lands where the spoken languages were often not his own. In middle school, my science project dealt with the power of music on the growth of plants. Turns out, music can have a nurturing or negative effect on plants. As a health reporter, I have read numerous music therapy studies, all of which show the profound power of music to healing.  So, when I stumbled across a research study involving cats and music as therapy, it did not surprise me the findings were equally positive.

LIKE A BIRD ON THE WIRE

Two+doves040

I had a revelation at a stoplight today. Yes, it happened before the light turned green.  (I'll admit it was a fairly long light...)

As I waited, not really thinking about anything, I barely noticed the two pigeons on the telephone wire until I saw the shadow of a hawk passed overhead. They saw it too. The hawk made a lazy circle and descended a few feet closer to the pigeons. They saw it too...and flew like mad into the afternoon sky.

THE MORNING GLORY STORY

Morning glory

This is a tale of resistance, acceptance, and surrender. In the starring role is the lovely but pernicious morning glory vine.

Patrick thought he was doing a good thing when he planted some morning glory around the perimeter of our yard. For the first year or two we eagerly awaited those beautiful bright blue-violet flowers that show their full range of hues over the course of a single day.

WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

Bowl_of_lemons

In the blink of an eye everything changes
In the blink of an eye it goes by so fast
In the blink of an eye life rearranges
The only thing constant is nothing can last …
  - from In The Blink of an Eye by Sandi Kimmel & Thomas Barquee

I'm about to share something that is having a big impact on our world. This past July, Patrick received the scary diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease…and our lives changed in the blink of an eye.

ON THE ROAD TO FIND OUT

Hiker on log in redwoods

The journey to authenticity has many stops along the way as we gain new insights, then pause to rest and integrate, marshal our inner resources and continue on. I remember being both exhilarated and exasperated when an insightful friend told me “I can tell that the path before you is wide open. There are no other footprints on It…but it's ready for yours.”

FOLLOWING MY NOSE

Flowers us

I loved my life in New York. I loved the woods I walked in, I loved the Hudson River, I loved my friends and most of all, I loved the seasons. So when I met my future husband who lived in Southern California, it was with more than a little trepidation that I packed up my life and headed West.
