A RUDE AWAKENING

Earthquakes2

A few weeks ago, I was awakened in the middle of the night in more ways than one…

There was a strange groaning sound that permeated the house. And then the shaking started, and my bed rocked in ways I didn't know were possible. The earth shuddered for what seemed like a very long time. It was the first time I ever felt truly frightened by an earthquake. This one registered 5.8 on the Richter scale… but much higher on my own personal measure.

GRACE (Let It Flow) - The Story Behind the Song

The-beatles-complete-chord-songbook

I found myself thinking about the concept of "Grace" - what I thought it meant, what I hoped it meant, and what I felt it meant. Around the same time, I was noodling with a chord progression that music healers use to activate various healing centers in the body. (C-E-F-D, for those of you who are curious.) I had also been thinking a lot about many of the true-isms I'd picked up on my journey, wishing to share them in much the way I wish to share everything I learn. And, oh yes, there was one other important element to mention. I had just purchased The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook and had been slowly working my way through all my favorite songs. That's the background for the writing of GRACE (Let It Flow) - The Story Behind the Song and what emerged as a result.

Guitar in hand, and seriousness of purpose, the first lines of the song emerged:
Darkness is just waiting for light, shadows are waiting for love
Morning always follows the night, heaven isn't only above…

And then I waited. I waited for inspiration, for direction, for where this song wanted to take me. I waited for a while… And then I looked up and saw The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook and had the inspired idea to ask John Lennon to guide me. He did.
Grace makes it so. Let it flow…

I was feeling a little more confident as I shared more of what I learned:
Kindness isn't only a word
Different is just a belief
Lines that separate us are blurred
Freedom is the first step toward peace…

Where to go from here? John told me…
Let it flow with every word
Let it flow in every deed
Let it flow like running water flowing down on every seed.

Together, we finished the song. At least that's how I like to think of it. I'm not sure what would happen if I indicated that we collaborated on it. But now you know, too. And when you listen to the song, I know you'll feel John's love…and mine.

GRACE (Let It Flow)
Words & music by Sandi Kimmel

Darkness is just waiting for light
Shadows are waiting for love
Morning always follows the night
Heaven isn’t only above.

    Grace makes it so –
    Let it flow.

Kindness isn’t only a word
Different is just a belief
Lines that separate us are blurred
Freedom is the first step toward peace

    Grace makes it so –
    Let it flow.

Let it flow with every word
Let it flow in every deed
Let it flow like running water
        Flowing down on every seed.

Open feels much better than closed
Giving doesn’t mean there is less
Living with your own heart exposed
Blesses everyone that you pass

Grace makes it so –
    Let it flow.

Let it flow with every word
Let it flow in every deed
Let it flow like running water
        Flowing down on every seed

Grace makes it so –
    Let it flow.
    Let it flow.

LIFE LESSONS FROM THE BALLGAME

Game

A perfect summer night at a Padres game was the unlikely backdrop for some really big insights about people...and me.

I'll admit, I was less than enthusiastic when Patrick and I were invited to attend the game. I like baseball well enough, but I have never been a die-hard fan of any team. I vaguely remember going to Fenway Park when I was a kid at summer camp, and our seats were WAY up in the stands. The players looked like toy figures moving around below, but I couldn't really SEE anything. I spent most of the game with my friends out of our seats in search of distraction. But oh,well... This was a Father's Day invitation we couldn't refuse from Patrick's daughter and son-in-law.

FOREVER IN LOVE -The Story Behind the Song

Heart rings

Walking through a card store one day, I spotted a wedding card with the headline: May you live in love forever... It occurred to me that it could be a palindrome - the same, forward and backward.

May you live in love forever
May you live forever in love

When a thought like that occurs to me, I know a song won’t be far behind. And the timing was perfect too. My friends Mary and Mike were planning their wedding, and in addition to being one of the Officiants to guide them through their vows, I was also asked to provide some music.

As Mary walked down the aisle, I played my song “Love.” Sometime during the ceremony, I sang “If I Could Give You Everything.”

But my favorite moment was surprising them with the song I wrote for the occasion, just for them. And I must say that it tickles me now to know that it’s been played at many weddings over the years, and I suspect many more to come.

Know anyone getting married??

Forever In Love is one of the songs on my first album TRANSITIONS - Music to Soothe the Soul.  Featuring John Guth, the song and the album are available on my website, or you can download it at CD Baby and iTunes. Thanks for listening...and sharing!

FOREVER IN LOVE
Music & Lyrics by Sandi Kimmel

May you live in love forever
May you live forever in love.
May you live in love forever
May you live forever in love.

Be the anchor in safe harbor,
Be the shoreline to the sea.
Feel the magic in each other's arms
Feel free, feel free.

CHORUS

Love is the language of the heart
And it whispers your name.
To love someone is to learn their song
And sing it to them everyday.

Be the windsong and the morning sky,
Be the fire of the sun.
In the silence of each other's eyes
Be one, be one.

CHORUS

SHIFTING GEARS

One of the things I love most about writing my blog twice a week is that I am constantly aware of topics to share that come straight out of my own experiences. This morning, Patrick and I dusted off our bicycles for the first ride of the season, and today's blog presented itself within the first mile.
