IN OTHER WORDS
Driving toward our Sunday hike, Patrick and I passed a hand-painted sign that I caught out of the corner of my eye. It said:
Golf Cart
Fishing Poles
Art
I asked Patrick, “Do you think that means they make art for fishing poles? Wouldn’t that change the weight of the pole? And who would ever want art for the golf cart?” He responded, “Or does that mean they MAKE art with fishing poles? I’m not sure how they’d make art with golf carts…”
We discussed the relative merits to having art made out of fishing poles and golf carts…and went on our walk. On the way home, we made a special detour to stop at the sign so that Patrick could see it too.
When we walked over to it, we both had to laugh. We only had half of the story. Part of the sign was folded over itself and had been hidden from us. The top of the sign had ANOTHER sign that told the WHOLE sign said:
Garage Sale
Sunday
Golf Cart
Fishing Poles
Art
HA! So it was a Garage Sale with a golf cart, fishing poles AND art for sale!
It got me thinking about how important the order of words can be, especially on a hand-painted sign. Then I had another word order incident that REALLY got me thinking…
Someone had given me a little book of Spiritual Wisdom on Life After Death. The book was on the table. I happened to notice it upside down and thought it read: Death After Life
Hmm, what If THAT’S the truth and we have it all wrong? What if THIS is the dream and what happens to us afterwards is the whole enchilada?
I started to think about rearranging lots of common phrases, but so far, nothing amuses me more than Death After Life and Fishing Pole Art.
I will also do my best to remember that we often only have half of the story…
