RARE RAINY DAY - The Story Behind the Song

Rain-on-window

One of the surest ways for me to anchor a concept in my subconscious is to write it into a song. There is something about the combination of the words, which are a left brain function, and the music which is a right brain function, that enable a message to sink in on a cellular level. I'd been thinking about the concepts of surrendering and trusting the flow to take me where I'm going.

"I think that the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust."

I picked up my guitar and sat in the front room listening to the rain and the wind against the window. This was an uncommon occurrence in my Southern California reality. But on this particular day, I was filled with memories of growing up in New York and enjoying many a rainstorm and was happy to have the afternoon to play and dream.

"It's a rare rainy day and the wind keeps on blowing
A rare rainy day, will I get where I'm going today?"

The rhythm of the rain lent itself easily to the chords I was playing. I hadn't actually written anything new in quite a while, and this one came easily.

Some months later, my life took a turn in a direction I can only describe as a result of trusting the unfolding. A friend of a friend of an acquaintance suggested I meet Thomas Barquee. She wasn't sure why, but she had a good feeling about it. Thomas and I spoke, and he suggested I come up to his recording studio in LA to see if our musical styles were compatible. Rare Rainy Day was the only new song that hadn't already been recorded on one of my other albums, perfect for our purposes. With guitar in hand, the journey began.

The rest, as they say, is history…a wonderful collaboration that continues to this day.  After Thomas produced my album Soul Feathers in 2014, we started writing songs together.  We continue to "trust the unfolding" as he prepares to take our songs on tour all over the country.

I've learned a lot about surrender and the ease of going with the flow. I only wish rainy days weren't so rare...

RARE RAINY DAY
Music & lyrics by Sandi Kimmel

It’s a rare rainy day
And the wind keeps on blowing
A rare rainy day
Will I get where I’m going today?

I think that the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust

All our stories make stitches
And stitches take time
Friends connecting together
Embroidering mine

Stitching stories together
The patterns reveal
More and more of the essence
As parts of me heal.

I think that the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust the unfolding
I think the trick is to trust

It’s a rare rainy day
And the wind keeps on blowing
A rare rainy day
Will I get where I’m going
It’s a rare rainy day
Well, at least it’s not snowing today
Rainy day, rainy day…
