How many times have I assumed something only to find out that I was completely and totally wrong? More times than I care to think about…  (You know the old saying, A.S.S.U.M.E. = makes an ass of you and me!)

Situation: Patrick and I were taking a morning walk through a park that has one loooong trail through it. We often stop to “smell the flowers” or notice some little “postcard from nature” or pet a dog or smile at a child. It’s the way we roll.

At a certain point, I noticed an older woman about 100 paces behind us. When we got to the top of the hill (and the end of the path), we turned around just as the woman caught up to us. I smiled and said a cheery, “Good morning!” Patrick smiled and also greeted her with a warm, “Good morning!” Nothing. Not a word.

About twenty paces apart now, we heard her say SOMETHING…more like a loud grunt.

“What did she say?” I asked Patrick.

“I’m not sure but I think she barked at us for not saying hello,” he responded.

“But we DID say hello! We BOTH said hello!! She didn’t respond!”

Patrick and I spent the next few minutes really bugged. How dare she grunt at us! Did she not hear our cheerfulness?? And now SHE was mad at US for not saying hello? HELLO!

We muttered about how some people are so unfriendly. It might just be the root of all that’s wrong with the world, we decided. And while we do our best to lift spirits, some people just cannot be reached with cheerfulness.

A few minutes later, I heard her again. I turned around to see her talking on a cellphone through her earbuds. Not only wasn’t she grunting at us, she hadn’t even HEARD our greeting!

How many times have I assumed something only to find out I was completely and totally wrong? I don’t know…but I will definitely add this misperception to the list. The mere mention of Miss Perception will always illicit a little grunt from me…

August 26th was Women’s Equality Day. There is a growing awareness and sensitivity (finally) to the gender imbalance in our current world. I’m proud of my brother, Michael Kimmel, for devoting his career toward shifting the balance, and if his 17-year old son Zachary's perspective is an indication of the kind of young men coming of age, we will indeed find our way toward gender equality.

When we lower our guard, it's easy to be fooled by how things appear instead of how they really are. Plus our ever sharp minds have been trained to instantly evaluate overwhelming amounts of information, sensory stimulation and potential risk bombarding us. Whew! It's positively exhausting! And the irony is that just when we think we're so smart for making these judgments based on what we THINK we know, we often discover that we didn't know anything at all. Embarrassing but true, we were flat-out wrong!

WE ARE ALL CONNECTED - A Feast for the Eyes, Ears & Heart

Patrick came across an incredible YouTube video this morning that invited me in closer. Originally released in 1986, it combines a mash-up of talks by Carl Sagan, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Richard Feynman and Bill Nye, coupled with eerily compelling music and dated yet eternal images. It is stunning and relevant and important.

I am sharing it here today to help re-mind us that we are all in this together- from the tiny hummingbird on the purple morning glory to the luminous moon on the lazy river. In this divisive time in our world, it's empowering to re-member that we are becoming a conscious part of the whole.

According to Neil Degrasse Tyson, “We are all connected to each other, biologically; to the earth, chemically; to the rest of the universe, atomically” . Have you ever noticed that if you simply move the final "h" in EARTH to the beginning of the word it spells HEART? Cool, right? Connected.

I place my hands over my heart, breathe in, and offer a love song, Love Mother Earth. I invite you to watch and listen and whatever order you please. And if you touch your heart somewhere along the way, I know the earth will know. Don’t ask me how…I just do.

Love Mother Earth

Love Mother Earth is one of the 12 songs on my newest album SOUL FEATHERS.  Produced by Thomas Barquee, the CD is available on my website, or you can download it at CD Baby and iTunes. Or listen to ALL of my music on SoundCloud. Thanks for listening!
